"Success is a Choice"
After 90 minutes of regulation and overtime play the score is tied 0-0. Penalty kicks would determine the state championship. Down 4-3 with one shot left for our team, I calmly address the ball, back away several steps, and patiently await the referee’s whistle. If I score, we go to sudden-death penalty shots. If I miss, our season is over.
Eleven years earlier, at age two, my parents began teaching me I was ultimately responsible and accountable for every action I took, for every thought I had. My choices were limitless, but along with those rights came great responsibilities. Through my remaining childhood experiences I learned consequences from my actions. Choose to play with friends or study more to ace geometry? Diligently practice piano to win a recital competition or play x-box? Skip basketball practice for a school dance? Focus on one sport or play many? Do what your heart says or your head?
Whilst choices seem endless and consequences not secure, there is one dual-tenet I rely on to help me navigate waters; have fun in everything you do and stay true to the things you love.
I have fun working hard, striving to be the best person I can be, facing challenges head on, using willpower to overcome my fears. I love my friends, my family, learning, being successful in my studies, and playing a variety of sports well.
I strike the ball perfectly into the back of the net. Our team wins the state title on the next kick. My friends and family are there to share my joy. My name is Luke Kazmierczak and I believe success is a choice.
